Some very helpful hints on planning your wedding day

Wedding Venues on a Budget

Picking a venue for your wedding is one of the most important parts of the planning process. Not only does the venue need to be big enough to accommodate all of your guests, it needs to accessible, fit your theme and, most importantly, be to yours and your partner’s liking. However, with some venues costing in excess of thousands, picking the right one has become more about finding the cheapest in cost and not about what the bride and groom actually want for their big day. Here are some wedding venues that will fit into even the smallest of budgets, allowing for the rest of the money to go elsewhere on other aspects of the wedding so that your day is everything you want it to be.

Home is where the heart is
If you and your partner – or someone you know – happen to have a stunning garden that you enjoy spending time in, why not have your wedding reception there? Although many would cringe at the idea of having a wedding reception in their own home, many are turning to this method as a way to cut costs on their wedding day, and with the right decorations and arrangements, it can be a stunning, quaint reception venue. Additionally, friends and family are likely to live nearby, saving on travel expenses; for those who don’t live nearby, make arrangements in advance where they can stay, whether this is at your home, a close friend or family member’s home, or a nearby hotel.
Other steps you can take to make sure your home wedding reception is spectacular are:
·         ensure the garden is tidy – weed and groom it ahead of time
·         plant extra flowers
·         hire a marquee
·         purchase plenty of food and alcohol
·         invite neighbours or warn those in the surrounding area that there’s a wedding reception taking place in case of noise complaints.
Please note that although having the reception at home is a cost effective way to celebrate your marriage, holding the wedding itself at home, unless one of you is seriously ill, is illegal.

Saving money at the venue
If you choose to allocate a portion of your budget to venue hire, there are still a number of ways to cut the overall costs. For example, purchase or make your own unique wedding altar; ensure the colours match your chosen colour scheme and style fits yours and your future spouse’s personality. Ask members of the wedding party to help so that they feel part of the experience. You can then keep the altar forever so that you have a lifelong souvenir from your big day.
Call in favours from your family and friends in regards to food. Have each couple bring in a dish of their choosing. This way everyone will have contributed and your wedding will have an eclectic buffet with manageable food that people can pick at, with something for everyone so that no one goes hungry.

Honey moon destination..

HONEY MOON DESTINATION

Choosing your honeymoon trip can
be quite confusing as nowadays there are so many destinations to choose from. You could go on a romantic cruise or choose one of the old favourites like Hawaii, the Caribbean or Mexico. You might consider a trip to Europe to see some of the capital cities or even head for Japan to visit some of its temples. The choices are endless and there are no hard and fast rules about where you should spend your honeymoon - it depends entirely on your taste and preference.
If you enjoy dining, the arts and shopping you can't go far wrong with a city break. This has the added advantage that there is something to be enjoyed in any season. Make sure you book early if you want tickets for the theatre or special art exhibitions. Popular restaurants also get booked up and it would be a good idea to book ahead in order to avoid disappointment. Buy a good guidebook or check out the information online.
What could be more romantic than a honeymoon is Paris? Be aware, however, that it is not one of the cheaper places, as indeed many European cities are quite expensive. You might consider Chicago or New York, both have some wonderful architecture to explore as well as parks and open spaces. You might try Santa Fe, where you can get fabulous food and experience a great native American feel. If your budget is large you might consider Cape Town in South Africa with its warm climate and fine wines.
Remember to pack some comfortable shoes for a city break, as you will do a lot of walking, but also take some smart clothes for restaurants and theatre visits. Remember that cities are quite often cheaper in the off-season and you'll also encounter fewer tourists and shorter queues.
If you want to spend your honeymoon in the great outdoors you need to consider the seasons carefully. You might want to visit one of the American National Parks, just remember that national park lodges get booked out months in advance, so you need to book early. If you have your heart set on a Grand Canyon mule ride, it is essential to book six to eight months in advance. If you are getting married in the winter you could stay in one of the quiet, romantic inns in the Canadian Rockies. If you love the great outdoors, but still want a bit of pampering, look for destinations near luxury hotels, where you can get spa treatments and candlelit dinners.
For those who enjoy a beach holiday, remember that many of the Caribbean islands are known for their all inclusive honeymoon resorts. Food, drinks and sports are all included in the price and this makes it easy to budget. The downside is that it keeps you tied to one particular beach resort. It depends entirely on your tastes as to what type of resort you choose. Key West, Florida has small hotels and B&Bs together with a lively nightlife while North Carolina's Outer Banks combine history, nature and sea activities. For something really memorable, try a beach on an exotic island like the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, where you will experience true luxury.
A cruise has always been popular for honeymoons and some of the new mega-vessels offer everything you would get on land. You could also try a Mediterranean cruise on one of the smaller vessels. You should check up what life on board might be like: will there be late night parties and are you required to dress for dinner? You also need to check on incidental expenses, such as land excursions and tips for staff.
Just remember that this is your honeymoon and the first few days you will be spending together as husband and wife. Choose something you both enjoy and don't be tied down by convention.

GROOMS DUTIES

What Are the Duties of the Father of the Groom?

The parents of the bride play a vital role in planning their daughter's wedding, and traditionally, the father of the groom has had little to do. Times have changed and the father of the groom is becoming a bigger part of the planning and execution of his son's wedding. Some couples choose to include the groom's father in everything from planning the location of the ceremony to checking on the guests' welfare at the wedding reception.

  1. Offer Assistance

    • Offer to help with planning, whether it's site planning or travel arrangements for out of town guests. Don't be afraid that you're stepping on toes. It is quite likely that your assistance will be appreciated.

    Host Rehearsal Dinner

    • The parents of the groom host the rehearsal dinner, which is usually held the night before the wedding. The rehearsal dinner may easily be the most fun, most relaxed part of the wedding. The father of the groom can help make it a positive experience for everyone involved.

    Toast

    • The host of the rehearsal dinner, traditionally the groom's father, will make the first toast to the happy couple. If you're nervous about speaking in public it's fine to plan ahead. You can't go wrong if you speak from your heart as it will mean a great deal to your son and his fiance.

    Receiving Line

    • If there is a receiving line during the reception you will need to be part of it. Greet guests with a smile and thank them for attending the wedding.

    Alcohol Watch

    • While it's not the most glamorous of duties, the father of the groom insures that guests of the rehearsal dinner and wedding reception drink responsibly. Don't be afraid to close down the bar if too many guests have had enough.

    Moral Support

    • From talking with your son about his plans to propose to helping him work through his pre-wedding jitters, a father's role is to encourage his son throughout the engagement and marriage process. Your son will have lifelong memories of your support.

    Welcome

    • Make it a point to welcome your new daughter-in-law and her family into your family. This kindness will help set the tone for a pleasant relationship

Mother of the Groom

Responsibilities of the Mother of the Groom

The mother of the groom is often at a loss as to exactly what role she plays in the marriage of her son. This is even more true when she has not participated previously in a wedding for a daughter or other sibling. The following rules of etiquette are shared to increase the joy and fulfil the traditional responsibilities of the mother of the groom.

Her responsibilities include:
•The first rule of etiquette to be followed upon receiving news of the impending nuptials  is to initiate contact between the families.  Introducing herself and her husband to the bride's parents is her first responsibility.  This may be as simple as making a call to the bride's mother and telling her how happy she is about the engagement or an informal invitation to dinner at their home.  If preferred, dinner at a nice restaurant is always in order.  This may be with or without the couple in attendance.
If the parents live far away, a friendly letter is appropriate.  A snapshot of the family and maybe even one of her son as a small child is always welcomed by the bride's mother and is a kind gesture.

•The importance of providing an accurate and timely guest list can neither be over emphasized, nor the importance of sticking to the guidelines given her as to the number of guests she many invite.  Remember to include zip codes.

•It is the bride's mother who will first select a dress for her daughters wedding. A gown of  complimentary colour and similar styling is then chosen by the mother of the groom.  She must wear long if the bride's mother wears long or short if she wears short.  The colour should not match the bridesmaids, nor the brides' mother, but compliment both.

•Reservations for out-of-town guests, invited by the groom's family, are the responsibility of the mother of the groom. It will be much more convenient if a block of rooms are reserved at a nearby hotel, which is near her home.

•It is the responsibility of the groom's parents to host the rehearsal dinner.  This can be as simple as a salad potluck with paper plates in the backyard or as elaborate as an exotic dinner with live entertainment in the finest restaurant.  Everyone who takes a part in the ceremony is invited to the dinner.  It is proper etiquette to invite the spouse or significant other of those participating, and the parents of children in the wedding.

•Scheduled family photographs, prior to the wedding, will dictate the groom's parents time of arrival. If photos are not scheduled to be taken before the ceremony, the arrival should be no less than one hour before the appointed time

•As the wedding begins, the groom's mother will be escorted down the aisle, to the first pew, right-hand side, by the head usher or a groomsman who is a family member.  A nice touch includes the groom escorting his mother down the aisle.  As the groom's mother is escorted to her seat, her husband will follow along behind.  However, if the parents are divorced, the father of the groom will have been seated previously, two pews behind the mother.

•The role as mother of the groom, in the ceremony, may include lighting the family candle on the altar, along with the mother of the bride.  Family candles are lit after the candle lighters have left the altar area, and prior to the entrance of the wedding party.

•The first official duty of the mother of the groom, during the reception is to stand in the receiving line greeting guests and introducing her friends and family to the bride and her family.    Traditionally she stands between the bride and her mother.  If the fathers of the couple choose to stand in the line, she will stand between them.

•Be familiar with the responsibilities of the Maid of Honour.  You may want to have a conversation with the Maid of Honour to coordinate and avoid stepping on each other's toes.

Sonya's Story

Bookmark and Share

Three years ago a wife, a mother, a sister had the world at her feet. She had two beautiful little girls, a husband, and was about to build their dream home. She was an international flight attendant and had a great sense of self worth....until. One fateful day her husband ran off, her younger sister was diagnosed with a Melanoma, and on top of everything else, she was forced to take a redundancy from what she thought was her dream job. Sonya Driver was left to raise her two young girls alone.

Abandoned, unemployed, and using what little energy she had left to lift her shattered spirit, she promised herself to be a strong positive influence for her fragile younger sister Rachael. For most women in the same circumstance it would be hard not to lock yourself away and let depression eat you up.

Sonya however, is not an average woman. This is where her life truly began....

“I remember the day all too well. In a second my life plan exploded into dust. My marriage was over via a phone call, and my dream home complete with a fireplace was all but a fleeting memory. My two gorgeous little girls kept asking me why I was crying so much. It’s been 3 years and they still ask why we can't be a family. I remind myself daily that Lady Di once was a single mum, and so I refuse to accept any element of shame associated with being a single parent. I even have the family stickers on the back of my car. 1 lady, 2 girls and a fat dog.” Sonya said.

Despite all the chaos and emotional pain that was engulfing her life, Sonya knew that if she didn’t shift her focus and energy into something uplifting then it would only be a matter of time before her battered self esteem would crumble. She drew herself wearily from the ground and decided to volunteer in East Timor to care for the poorest of the poor. She shampooed the hair of women that had never had their hair washed, fed hungry children, and comforted the sick.... “To be honest I was battling grief and anxiety and I couldn’t shake it. I knew deep inside my spirit that I needed to face a different kind of struggle and help bring comfort to others. I knew it would heal my wounds better than any medication ever could.”

After a month in East Timor and a new determination, Sonya came home, inspired by the women who struggle day to day living in the poorest conditions.

“It was time to make a positive change. I was still deeply affected by my sister Rachel’s cancer scare. She was also a young mum with two very small children and I couldn’t bare to think of what we would do if the cancer had travelled “too far”. I’m so grateful that the melanoma was on the front of her arm where she noticed the changes quickly. Anyone with a younger sibling who has been through a traumatic experience would know the helpless feeling you get when something like this happens.”

But from a dire situation came Sonya’s inspiration. Tanning had always been a favourite past time for the two sisters, but now that was definitely not an option.

“Sun protection was something I started looking into. I loved to spend hours in the sun tanning my pale complexion, so I knew this was going to get interesting. Much to the amusement of our kids, Rachel and I started using spray tans. I mean from what everyone claimed it was a much safer option.”
Curious about these claims, Sonya started researching the ingredients used in the tanning products she was using.
“I was appalled at the petrochemicals and synthetics that manufacturers were using to create these tanning products. Rachel's scar was deep and new and we didn’t want any toxic ingredients on her skin. From what I had learnt, much of what we put onto our skin gets absorbed through our blood stream.”

The fact Sonya felt so passionately about what her sister was putting on her skin after her diagnosis led her to create a true organic tanning product that both women and men can use. Her Eco Tan range recently made Australian history by becoming the first and only tanning products to be certified by the Organic Food Chain under the Australian Government.

“To be honest, manufacturing an organic product has been a tough battle, both personally and financially, but I believe what I’m doing is important. It’s a lot cheaper and easier to manufacture synthetics, money has never been my motivation. I want to look back on my life and feel I left a legacy of something positive, and wasn’t just a consumer on this earth.”

Sonya says creating the range has been a mix of blood, sweat and tears and has taken its toll on her family. “My girls have days when they ban me from talking about my business. I’ve spent thousands of hours sourcing and researching ingredients. I made small batches myself and my kitchen was turned into a lab as I experimented on my family and friends.”

It’s been an eye opening journey. “I almost wish I didn’t know as much as I do, it’s stopped me buying a lot of cosmetics on the shelves. I get so annoyed at the misleading natural and organic claims. It makes my blood boil!”

Sonya still lives in a tiny house without a dish washer and yep, she’s still a single mum. Her organic mission highlights to the best of us that no matter how dark your world turns, never give up and know you are worthy, strong and have value!

Synthetics and nasty ingredients have had their day. There are amazing Australian products out there that are affordable so we need to read the ingredients on labels and look past fancy marketing. Ask yourself, what’s the integrity of the company? Petrochemicals, nasty preservatives and synthetics, not really the words you’d associate with beauty?

Please contact me for any further information.

Sunless Tanning is a growing trend throughout Australia, and according to one Australian study, more than 9% of the population over the age of 18 use fake tanning products, 28% of which are women aged 18-24.

The wedding day is a very emotional 24 hours for the bride. Her expectations will be very high and nerves on edge, after all this is her magic moment. Keep in mind her need for support, plan to be there for her all the way. Make her feel totally loved and appreciated, give as much as you can; these tips will make you a heroic groom.

On Call
Keep your mobile phone charged and on so your bride can contact you at any time, even if it’s just to hear the sound of your strong, calming, reassuring voice.

Don’t Stray
Plan to stay close. Try not to venture too far away from where your wedding will be held. Flat tyres, fender-benders and traffic jams happen. Nothing worse than being held up because you decided to kill a few hours out of the way.

Regan Wedding By Fi Mims Photography
Special Delivery
Order a gourmet breakfast and flowers to be delivered to her; write a sweet note telling her that you can’t wait to see her at the ceremony. It will set her up for the rest of the day, help calm her nerves and reassure her that you really are the greatest guy.

Meet and Greet
Be there when guests arrive at the ceremony. Thank them for coming and sharing your special day. It will show you really appreciate her family and friends and you can introduce both sides of the family.

Schmooze It Up A Little
Remember to thank your bride’s parents privately and also during the toast. Your wife will be pleased and your new in-laws will be impressed with your thoughtfulness. They are going to be around for a lifetime, after all.

For The Record
Don’t be camera shy. Have fun at the photo-shoot and be demonstrative. Show your new wife you adore her and how happy you are to be her husband. Let the photos tell the story forever.

Move Baby Move
Dance the night away. Don’t be embarrassed, it’s your wedding and dancing shows your happiness. Dance with your wife, mum, mother-in-law and grandma. Encourage your grooms-men to dance too, the more on the dance floor the better.

Whisper Sweet nothings
Tell your bride how beautiful she looks. She has to hear it over and over. Everything you see about her, all the shopping, all the money that was spent was for you alone. Too many compliments are never enough.

Over The Top
Organise a surprise for your bride, something that will really take her breath away. You can easily hire a celebrity singer to present your favourite song but make sure the person is introduced properly. One groom hired the bride’s favourite, Marcia Hines. No-one believed it was really her, everyone thought she was an impersonator. Otherwise, fireworks could add extra sparkle to the occasion, a sky-writer might write your names up amongst the clouds.
